Coercion 15

Judged By the Company One Keeps

The next couple of weeks saw numerous encounters between the two. Xander’s new job was going well, and Spike was proving an attentive and inventive … roommate? … partner? … Okay, lover. Xander didn’t realize how much he craved contact of any kind before entering into this arrangement with Spike. The vamp was a regular cuddle junkie. And after he got used to it, Xander found he was, too. As they got more comfortable, the contact didn’t lead to sex as much. Xander was enjoying the anticipation of the possibility of maybe considering… other things.

Spike was considering going quietly mad. Sure, he liked the warmth of the boy and the pretty sounds he made when he came, but the vampire wanted more. The boy wouldn’t even let him go down on him yet for god’s sake! Tonight Spike was ready to test the limits of his chip. He wanted to see if it would consider it causing someone pain when he forced them to have done to them something they would thoroughly enjoy.

Xander’s new job went well. The managers treated him with respect, and as an employee he occasionally got first dibs on new stuff. At Spike’s insistence, his wardrobe improved vastly. Simple, properly fitting dress shirts and khakis replaced his wardrobe of oversized, loud shirts and baggy pants.

Seeing as how unreliable Xander’s parents were, Giles agreed to act as answering service as well as person reference. He was thoroughly on the side of getting Xander out of his parent’s basement.

One morning, Giles contacted Xander to inform him two of the places he had left applications wanted him for interviews. After work, he headed for Giles’ apartment. As he approached the building, he spied a familiar person standing in the courtyard outside the entrance.

“Oz?” he called.

The young man turned and a slow smile spread across his face as far as it ever did. “Xander,” he answered.

“It’s so great to see you, man. Why are you hanging about out here?”

The two went in and chatted with Giles. They touched on current events in Sunnydale; including the Initiative which was becoming more and more of a threat to humans as well as demons, and Spike’s condition. At the mention of Spike, Xander slapped his forehead. “I’ve got to get home.” Spike had teased him about being waiting for him as he left for work.

“Did you leave the toaster plugged in again?” Giles asked dryly.

“No. Um, Spike. He’s waiting for me. For his blood. Which I have yet to buy.”

Giles gave Xander a medium-furrowed brow. “You know, I think we’ve determined that Spike really is harmless. You don’t have to let him mooch off you.”

“I know. But. He helps. With the rent. Oz! Man! Come with me. We have bunches to talk about.”

“I want to find her,” Oz said quietly.

Xander didn’t have to ask who. Willow. “Oh. What’s today, Tuesday? She has classes for another three hours. Come with me, then I’ll give you directions to campus. Please?”

Oz nodded. They said their farewells to Giles and set off to do Xander’s errands. Xander babbled and Oz nodded as they drove.

Outside the house, Xander froze, his hand on the van's door handle, as the possibility of  finding Spike naked covered in rose petals came to mind. Not a bad image, but with company not so good. “Oz. Wait here a second. Spike… he gets bored and… plays tricks sometimes.”

Oz nodded and turned off the ignition.

Xander stepped into the dim basement only to be grabbed from behind. “You shouldn’t come into dark places all tasty like you are,” Spike growled. “Something might grab you and eat you.”

Xander closed his eyes for a second before petting Spike’s arm where it was like an iron bar across his chest. His cock twitched at the feel of corded muscles under his hand. “Not right now, Spike. We’ve got company.”

“Damnit,” Spike cursed, let go of Xander, and stomped to the chair, flinging himself down. “Who is it? Red?”

“No. It’s Oz.”

“Do I know that one?”

“He left just before you got chi... came back. Remember the spell that made you kiss Buffy?” Spike made a sour face. “That was a result of him leaving Willow. How about putting away the bed?” Xander said as he turned to leave. “Oh, he’s a werewolf.”

“This should be interesting,” Spike muttered to himself as he folded up the bed.

Oz came in and steadily met Spike’s eyes. He nodded and sat on the far end of the couch from Spike.

He talked a little about his travels and his quest to contain his wolf.

“Maybe Red and her new bird can magic you up some assistance,” Spike suggested.

Spike didn’t think anyone as stoic as Oz could go more still, but he did. The young man didn’t know his ex had moved on. “When did Willow get a pet?” Xander asked, oblivious.

“No. Not pet. Girlfriend,” Spike clarified, feeling the tension around the red head. “Tara.” He said carefully, explaining more to Oz than Xander. “She’s a special one. Very grounded. Earth magics.”

“Oh, yeah they do spells together…” Xander babbled on. Spike kept an eye on Oz as he closed his eyes, and apparently begin to chant as he clutched a string of beads at his throat.

“Harris,” Spike snapped, getting Xander’s attention. “They’re dating. Willow’s finally healing.”

“You don’t know that, Spike. You rarely see them together.”

Spike sighed and closed his eyes in exasperation. “I do. I can smell them. They are together.”

“Ew, I am so glad I don’t have a supernatural sense of smell…” The last ten minutes of conversation and Oz’s lack of contribution to it as well as the fact that the couch they sat on contained unwashed sheets and the fact that Oz was a werewolf all hit him at once. “Oh God, Oz. I didn’t know…”

By this time, Oz had centered himself. Xander met eyes only slightly darker than normal. “I should have known.”

“Oz, man. I’m sorry.”

“No worries,” Oz said calmly. “I’m glad I found out this way.” He stood to leave.

"You don’t have to leave.”

“Yeah. I do. Give me the address, and I’ll leave you two alone.”

Xander stood, blushing. “About that…”

“It’s cool. I’ve not seen you this happy before.” Oz traded nods with Spike and climbed the stairs.

Xander shot a panicked look at Spike and followed his old friend.

He found Oz standing in the yard, his eyes closed and his face turned up to the sun. “Oz?”

The red head let the tension go and turned to Xander. “I’m fine.”

“Go see her, will ya? She… she misses you. We all do.”

“Thanks, man.” Oz shot a glance back at he house. “You do seem happy, but be careful. He is still a demon. And sex and demons is a heady mixture.”

“Don’t I know it. Will I see you before you leave again?”

Oz shrugged, nodded, and climbed in his van.
